Home-School Tutoring UK Ltd is a family run business created 40 years ago by Margaret Sweetland, an ex-Headteacher, based in Hampshire. Her vision was for pupils to be able to access school quality tutors in their own homes. She was aware of the impact that a good tutor can have on each student.

Originally Hampshire was run as a stand-alone business. This was so successful that the business Associate model was launched in 1984. This enabled teachers to own and run their individual businesses. We all share a genuine passion to help the families we work with and the thrill for us is watching students achieve their goals with the help and guidance of our tutors!

A little bit about me ...

My name is Carolyn Watson. My husband Peter and I moved to Oxfordshire in 1989 with our three young sons (at the time they were 2, 5 and 7 in age). An exciting adventure for us as a family as we had no connection with the area and didn’t know anyone! My introduction to HST was in 2009 when I started out working as an Admin Assistant to the then Area Advisor Jake Wagg. Over time I became familiar with the working model of the business and made connections with our registered tutors.

I found the job very rewarding!

After a few years I took over the business as the Area Advisor (Home-School Tutoring Oxfordshire) and expanded it to cover West Berkshire - a new area which had to be built from scratch. In 2016 both areas amalgamated to create Home-School Tutoring Oxfordshire and West Berkshire Ltd. I am supported by my Assistant Jane who receives the requests for tuition and recruits
new tutors. She also applies her excellent organisational skills when it comes to processing tutor/pupil information and ensuring records are always up to date. Her supporting role to me in the business is exceptional. Together we have built a strong, well qualified and experienced team of exceptional tutors.

We are always on-hand to help our clients with our listening skills, choice of tutors with the ‘right experience’ and have a fantastic group of tutors to help out with their particular levels of expertise. We have been contacted over the years by many parents looking for help and direction for their child who might be having difficulty at school through classroom bullying, anxiety, concentration issues and lack of understanding of their subject. Some have removed their child from the school regime and are entirely home-schooling them – we can help guide them back into the school regime with gentle guidance and explanation. Individual one-to-one tuition is very effective.

Our ethos is to find the ‘right’ tutor for each individual pupil that comes to us for advice and assistance. We know our tutors individually which helps us match the tutor to pupil.

A recent testimonial from one of our grandparents shows how effective our tuition can be:

‘Our granddaughter was both demoralised and defiant. After her being out of school for four months I contacted Carolyn Watson of HST Oxon and West Berkshire for help. Carolyn was patient, understanding and helpful and has stayed in contact throughout. Within a few hours she had liaised with a tutor, checked his availability, and duly made contact with us and we met him a few days later. We were immediately impressed with his calm, gentle and encouraging nature. He gave our granddaughter a thorough assessment that evening, and a programme of lessons was arranged. The first tutorial was arranged for the following week. All has gone well ever since. He established a real rapport with our granddaughter who has thrived on his inspirational one-to-one tuition. Her attitude to learning has undergone a real transformation and she is studying all three Sciences and Maths. After just three months she is ready to return to mainstream education but wants to continue with the tutor who has inspired her. I cannot praise or thank him enough for his part in her progress.
