Welcome to Abbey Sailing Club

divider

Abbey  Sailing  Club  situated on the banks of the river Thames in the south of Abingdon is a friendly, welcoming  sailing  club. It has just celebrated its 90th anniversary serving local people in their aim to enjoy the river Thames.

The  club’s culture is to enable all members of the community from families with very young children wanting to learn to sail confidently in weekly training sessions, to those who enjoy weekly racing events, and also old timers who enjoy pottering around on more traditional dinghies.

With a number of qualified trainers, we particularly welcome those with no experience, to come and try a new skill. If you pop along you will be assured a great welcome and a taster session on the water soon after with no obligation. Equally, we welcome proficient sailors and trainers to help mentor newcomers.

There is a comfortable  club house and seating area by the water’s edge, where members can while away the time and have a drink, snack or barbecue on summer evenings after sailing. There are changing rooms, toilets and shower facilities on site.

We have a fleet of small dinghies for children to learn and racing dinghies that members can use. We also have a small number of Kayaks and Paddle Boards. There are safety boats with individuals trained in all aspects of safety afloat.

As you gain proficiency you may want to buy and store your dinghy in our secure grounds with slipway access to the river and a winch if needed. Members can access their boats and the facilities at any time. As a thriving club, there is invariably someone around to lend a helping hand.

The membership fees are extremely reasonable with a £25 joining fee plus an annual fee of £65 for individuals and £100 for families. As a community sports club run by members, we do ask that members contribute in organisation, events, training or maintenance & upkeep in a way that is reasonable in their circumstances, ensuring that all the various tasks are shared.

The  Abbey  Sailing  Club  is uniquely a friendly, warm, community spirited group of local people, where you will feel comfortable, welcome, and included by generous hearted people, some of whom have led the club for up to 50 years.
