Meet The New Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor of Carterton

divider
Kathy and Liz

Lots may not have heard of Kathy Godwin prior to her becoming the Carterton Town Mayor, but she has been one of those unsung heroes in our community for many years, working quietly in the background to make Carterton a better place.

Kathy has always taken an active role in the community she was on the Edith Moorhouse PTA, Edith Moorhouse Friends of the Nursery, and was an active member of the Carterton Hockey Club as a member of the committee, junior coach, umpire, and player.

She is an active member of the Carterton Litter Pickers, the Kilkenny Country Park Conservation Group, and the Carterton Social Club Committee. She is also a Trustee for the Carterton Family Centre, giving up her time to be hands-on with the team painting and decorating, as well as attending fundraising events and is a member of the Connecting Carterton team. She has been the Chair and active member of the Save the Rec Residents Group.

Sylvia Colley who runs the Carterton Litter Pickers group says “Kathy Godwin needs a huge well done from Carterton town for caring for the town so much demonstrated in her contributions. This month she supplied her own wheelbarrow and not only weeded around the primary school railings but scrubbed each and every one of them too. We need more Kathy Godwins”.

In the short time since becoming Mayor, she has attended the reopening of the refurbished Golden Eagle pub, attended the opening of the Community Garden on Shilton Park, raised the Armed Forces Day flag, and presented medals and trophies to the winners and runners-up at the Carterton Football Club 6-a-side competition.

She is supported in her role by Liz Wood who has a long history of working with some of the most vulnerable families in the community. Recently working with Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Oxfordshire with nothing. Liz has run the Drop-In Toddler Group for over twenty-five years giving up every Thursday evening and Friday morning to support local families and offering them a caring and welcoming environment. She has previously volunteered at Beavers and one of the local afterschool clubs. She currently volunteers alongside Gary Long, Families Minister at St John’s Church, organising crafts, activities, and events.

During the pandemic, Liz took an active role in supporting those in the community who were shielding. She collected weekly shopping and prescriptions for the most vulnerable residents. Liz also served with Kathy on the Save the Rec Residents Group, campaigning to give Carterton residents a voice about what happens in our community.

Kathy and Liz are part of the new team of councillors in Carterton and along with other councillors, will attend a Meet the Council event, on 26 July in the Town Hall from 10-12. The event is part of Carterton Celebrates week, so please call in for a chat or to raise any concerns.

If you can't make the event and would like to get in touch with either of them, please email
