Didcot Railway: So Much More Than Just a Train Ride

Travel back in time to the golden age of the Great Western Railway and savour the sights, sounds and smells of steam as you explore our 21-acre living museum which features exhibits from the Victorian era to the 1960’s.

Enjoy unlimited train rides which operate on at least one of our demonstration lines and explore our 1932 engine shed which houses our large collection of restored locomotives. Our Signalling Centre houses equipment at the heart of the Swindon Panel and on many open days, you’re able to see what it was like to control trains on the main line.

In addition to our standard steam days, we also host an array of special events throughout the year. Our gala events feature visiting engines and demonstrations of the equipment we use to restore our collection and you get the rare chance to see what we’re working on in our locomotive works and on 10 May, the iconic 1466 (the first engine we purchased) will be back with us following an extensive overhaul.

Children can let off steam in our specially designed play area and dress up as a station master in a Welford Park, our restored ticket office and everyone’s favourite bear, Paddington™ makes appearances through the year.

Relax over lunch in the engine shed café and pick up a souvenir from our gift emporium where you can buy from a fabulous selection of gifts including our own brewed beer and Great Western Railway Monopoly.

The modern trains running past Didcot Railway Centre completes the picture, so you can explore 180 of railway progress in just once day.
