Didcot Casuals FC: A Club for The Community

divider

Didcot Casuals FC was formed right back in 1969, with a Men’s football team operating from Edmunds Park, Didcot. The team enjoyed particular success in the 80’s and 90’s, winning the war memorial cup in 1986 and 1990 before the Club was temporarily disbanded.

Re-built in 1999, Didcot Casuals was thankfully re-born as a Club for the Community, and the club’s philosophy has remained true ever since – ‘Football for Everyone – no fuss, no trials’. In 2004 the Club was awarded Charter Standard by Berks & Bucks FA in recognition of its work in junior development, underpinned by encouraging children to develop new skills, compete and have fun.

Playing in its classic yellow and blue striped shirts alongside the Club’s motif referencing the town’s railway and power station heritage, the Club now operates from Didcot’s Loyd Park (Brasenose) for younger age groups, and The Triangle (St Birinus School sports facility) for older age groups. With over 23 fully subscribed teams and 297 players, the Club is thriving once again in the community - supported by a network of over 75 volunteer managers and coaches from U7 - U16 in Oxfordshire Youth (OYFL) & Girls (OGFL) Football Leagues, plus Men’s Sunday league team. The Club is supported by a passionate and committed exec committee focussed on player development and welfare.

To introduce younger children to football, the Club operates ‘Rising Stars,’ drop-in coaching sessions most Saturdays for 3-7-year-olds at Brasenose. The Club has thriving and growing Girls team setup, too, including ‘Wildcats’ which welcomes girls aged 6-11, inspired in-part by the Lionesses’ recent journey to success.

The Club relaunched its annual summer tournament in 2023, receiving excellent acclaim locally, leading to the Club planning next year’s ‘Festival of Football 2024’ already – watch this space!

Experienced Coaches have said that the 13- 15 year old teams often struggle as the boys mature. Some have a change of heart and move in a different direction, some become passionate about the game. Some parents bring their lads along to try and give them a focus, a physical outlet or to give them a direction in which to find themselves. Our team has struggled with these challenges and as Coaches we have deliberately sought to develop the team with a focus on the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS).
