Local community theatre company, AmEgos, has taken on the extraordinary, award winning play ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ as their next production.
Mark Haddon's bestselling book of the same name has become an enduring favourite and is often on school exam syllabuses; Simon Stephens adapted the book into a highly acclaimed play and now AmEgos are bringing it to Wantage. The play runs from 31st October to 2nd November at King Alfred's Academy Theatre, Portway. Performances are nightly at 7.30pm, and they are also holding a relaxed performance at 2.30pm on Saturday for those who might find going to the theatre a little stressful.
The story of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ revolves around 15-year-old Christopher Boone, who discovers one night that his neighbour's dog has been killed. As he is the chief suspect in this crime, he sets about trying to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. Christopher has an extraordinary brain and is exceptional at maths, but he is ill-equipped to deal with everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. But Christopher’s detective work takes him on a frightening journey that uncovers dark family secrets and turns his world upside-down.
With a cast of ten local people, this is a challenging play to take on, but director Lesley Phillips couldn't be more excited. She says:
"This is such an amazing play, it is insightful, touching and bleakly humorous and, having seen it in the West End, I so wanted to stage it for local audiences. Many of the actors have to play multiple roles to populate Christopher's world, and that in itself is an adventure! The acting performances are supported by an original soundtrack and lighting effects and I'm hoping that the audience will be wowed by this fabulous combination."
The AmEgos came together back in 2012, which is the same year that this play first premiered. The drama group have to date produced 21 plays and musicals, playing to over 6,800 people. Already in the pipeline for April 2025 is a production of the fabulous Broadway Musical ‘Kiss Me Kate’.
