Many of us have clothes hanging in our wardrobe that we no longer wear. That does not mean to say there is anything wrong with them but perhaps they no longer fit, your lifestyle has changed, and you no longer require business clothes to wear to work or you are simply bored with them. Now, thanks to an initiative organised by Sustainable Wantage and Grow Families, you can be part of a Clothes Swap taking place at Wantage Methodist Church in Newbury Street on Saturday 19th October.

All you need to do is bring at least one clean and presentable item to swap. You can take away as many items as you bring in. Alternatively, the extra items can be taken for a donation and all items leftover, over will be donated, or recycled. You need to drop off items between 9am and 11am. You can select items from 11.30 until 12.30pm the same day. Shoes and accessories are accepted but no underwear, swimwear, nightwear, or earrings.

Alongside the adults’ clothes swap, there is one for children’s clothes, toys, books, and equipment. The drop-off times for these items are from 9am until 9.45am and you can select new items from 10.15am until 11am.

A similar event was held in April, also in collaboration with Grow Families (growfamilies.co.uk) which saw 55 visitors to the children’s swap and 42 came along to the adult’s swap. Sustainable Wantage and Grow Families were able to swap 38.83kg of children’s clothes, 37.92kg of toys and 7kg of books. For the adults, 38.17kg of clothes and 12.47kg of books found new homes. Along with this, there were 51.97kg of clothes and 38.06kg of books which went to charity shops around the town. This was an incredible 224.42kg of items going back into the system and not being thrown away. Organisers would love to see even more at the October event.

How many times do we have an item which no longer works but only requires a simple fix to bring it back to life?
