The last year has seen both joy and sadness in Wantage with HM Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and of course sadness in her sudden passing. In September a proclamation for the ascension of King Charles III was given by the Town Mayor in the Market Place and arrangements are already well underway for celebrations in the town on the day of the coronation in May.
The Dickensian Evening held on the first Friday every December has become a hugely successful community event. It allows local charities to raise funds, and local businesses and shops to promote themselves. This with the Christmas markets, is in addition to the popular Artisan and weekly Markets throughout the year.
Rising costs are obviously a big concern for the coming year. However, the town is proud of those local organisations giving support and advice. These include the Wantage and Grove Energy Support Fund (contact help@vci.org.uk or call 01235 765348) and the local Food Bank and Community Larder (contact: wantageandgrovefoodbank) Wantage Library is also offering its premises for people to spend time, to help relieve isolation and loneliness, as well as providing warmth.
Local clubs, groups and charities are being invited to advertise their activities or attract new members by promoting them in the large open area in the Market Place West End. Performances and displays are particularly welcome. Contact jim.mitchell@wantagetowncouncil.gov.uk for further information.
