As some of you know, West Oxon Boxing and Fitness Club moved premises as we had outgrown our old unit. After a long haul, and lots of much appreciated help, we finally re-opened our doors at the beginning of June 2023. It’s fair to say that with over 150 members already signed up and new sessions being added, we have been flat out.

Finally being ready for the club to start adding extra sessions due to high demand is such an achievement and pleasure, especially in current times of financial constraint. We are thrilled to announce that from Monday 25 September we will be introducing two new children's classes. These will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays 5.00pm-5.45pm. No need to book, we have plenty of space.

It is easy to lead a sedentary life, especially with the ease of access to technology, which makes it more challenging to encourage children to be physically active. There are many great benefits to signing your child up for boxfit classes, as well as helping them build self-confidence and physical fitness. Just like adults, children who participate in boxing work through their fears. Children who box also learn to be more disciplined and consistent.

Boxing for children is a great way to boost your child’s fitness and general health while simultaneously teaching them valuable lessons like dedication, self-discipline, and respect. We aim to work on social and emotional inclusion as well as coordination and balance skills. If you are interested in getting your child started in the sport, you can enrol them in our children’s non-contact box fit classes.

We will also be running a second Ladies Only Boxfit Session staring on Tuesday 5 September. Tarnia came along to the club a few years ago with her teenage children with no intention of training herself. It’s fair to say she was hooked and went from a nervous newbie to an amazing strong lady who went on to compete on our charity show. Tarnia is keen to support you in meeting your goals.

Experienced Coaches have said that the 13- 15 year old teams often struggle as the boys mature. Some have a change of heart and move in a different direction, some become passionate about the game. Some parents bring their lads along to try and give them a focus, a physical outlet or to give them a direction in which to find themselves. Our team has struggled with these challenges and as Coaches we have deliberately sought to develop the team with a focus on the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS).

Abingdon has held a connection with Amateur Boxing since 1931 when the Abingdon Town Amateur Boxing Club was first established. Whilst it closed temporarily in 2017 due to it not having its own premises, they reopened in September 2022, using facilities at the Abingdon United Football Club.
