Proprietor of Wates & Co Delicatessen in Langdale Court, Witney, Sophie Williamson is a purveyor of a wide range of delicious food items that will whet your appetite and tickle your taste buds. Her mission is to supply high quality goods to her customers who live in and around Witney. With an easily accessible car park just beyond her shop, it is worth popping in to see what she has available as there is a lot to choose from, whether it is traditional fare to the, ‘wow! I have never seen that before.’

Since she took over the shop in June 2023, Sophie has extended the range of ‘foodie’ items she sells and has added freshly ground coffee and beans supplied by local coffee roaster Last Unicorn Coffee. She is also expanding her range of interesting non-food items so if you are looking to create an authentic paella you can buy the appropriate pan in which to do so. You will also find a range of interesting terracotta dishes and jugs, useful for serving all types of food and drink. Some of the items on sale make great gifts too for friends and family who are foodies.

“Getting into the delicatessen business took me back into an environment I love, namely catering and being a shop owner,” Sophie tells us. “I had worked as a bookkeeper but have always had a keen interest in food and retail. I also love to bake cakes and make sausage rolls which I frequently used to take into the office where I work for my colleagues to enjoy. Wanting to own my own Deli for years so when Wates came up for sale, I knew I had to have it! I like to stock super tasty but unusual products from black charcoal cheddar which has a delicious, strong flavour to pickled Brussel sprouts which are made by Aunty Caroline. We also stock her incredible pickled eggs, pickled shallots and onions, all the perfect accompaniment to our range of cheeses. We make a range of sausage rolls ourselves, including gluten free varieties whilst our Scotch eggs are supplied by the Happy Belly Co. I am always on the lookout for more local suppliers so please get in touch if you have something you would like me to consider.”

In addition to the really fresh fruit and vegetables delivered every morning, amongst Sophie’s other local suppliers are Oakes Hot Sauce, Homemade by Maggie, Cotswold Fudge, Kandy Wonderland, Hanborough Honey and Billy’s Eggs which they use in all their cakes and quiches sold within Wates & Co. You will also find a selection of fresh olives, pesto, together with a range of chutneys, jams, biscuits, and crackers.

If you are looking for a tasty snack, whatever time of the day, you can choose from tasty items such as cheddar and bacon wraps, mouth-watering sausage rolls with specials added such as cheese and marmite and popular sausage, bacon, cheddar, and cranberry wraps. For those with a sweet tooth, well resistance to Sophie’s brownies and cakes is futile so why not indulge and have a treat? You can also buy a takeaway Caffeica coffee to enjoy with your savoury or sweet treat.

Another service that Sophie offers her local customers is the delivery of local fruit and veg box delivered in the evenings. Wates & Co Delicatessen is open from 8.30am until 4.30pm Mondays to Saturday inclusive. Keep a look out for new products and services as more will be added through the year.

Sophie looks forward to meeting you and serving you very soon!

When I saw a post on Facebook promoting Scone Baking Demos with the chance to learn how to bake the most delicious scones possible, followed by the opportunity to indulge in a traditional English afternoon tea, I was intrigued and wanted to know more. What I discovered when I visit chezbeccy.com is that Beccy Hunt is a lady who has a passion for baking, and I decided it was time to have a chat with her to find out more.
